That is always a fantastic question. The best answer is to select something that reflects you. If you like fashion and trends, then your portraits should reflect that. If you want your portraits to emphasize relationships, then sometimes it is better to select clothing that can vanish into the portrait and become secondary to the people. Your design consultation is an important step and will allow us to help you select clothing that will complement your style and decor.
Things to consider:
For family portraits, everyone can wear black shirts or white shirts with jeans or khakis. But other options that are beautiful would be selecting a color which complements your family as a whole. Family members could also dress in cool tones or pastels or jewel tones so that everyone doesn’t have to match. The general rule is to lay everything out together including shoes and socks and look at it. If you could wear it all together or mix and match the pieces successfully then it should work beautifully. However, if your eye goes to one piece or another repeatedly, then that piece would also stand out in a portrait and should be reconsidered.
Makeup should be worn generally as you would normally wear it. For women who don’t usually wear makeup, I recommend considering light makeup for portraits because portraits tend to emphasize pores and blemishes. Nails should also be considered as they are often visible in portraits.
Shoes should be selected to complement the portrait style selected. Barefoot portraits are great as well. But please assume when dressing that your shoes and socks will be included in the portrait and should therefore match your style.
It is also important that you are comfortable during the session. This is especially important for children so that they aren’t freezing or miserably hot while being photographed. I also recommend that if youare self-conscious about a part of your body that you dress so as to minimize that self-consciousness. For example, wear long sleeves if you are conscious of your arms or a turtleneck sweater if you don’t like your neck. Please also be sure to let us know if there is something that you are self-conscious about. There are many ways we can assist you with posing to remove those concerns if we know they exist.
Do you do engagement photographs or bridal portraits?
Absolutely! We love to do engagements and bridals! We understand completely especially that Aggie couples who may not be having their wedding here or may have a wedding photographer who doesn’t travel would love engagement or bridal portraits taken on campus to reflect their Aggie spirit! Our standard creative session fees apply in these cases.
Do you photograph weddings?
The answer to this question is yes, but only occasionally. I have chosen to limit the number of weddings I photograph to only a very select few because of the amount of time involved away from my husband and children when I am photographing weddings. My family is very important to me and I do not want to miss our precious time together regularly. If you are interested in a wedding consultation, please feel free to contact me. Wedding packages are created specifically for you on a quotation basis so that you can get exactly what you need for your wedding portraiture.
Do you travel?
I am willing and available for locations around Bryan/College Station based on schedule availability. Location charges and travel costs would be quoted based on the time involved.
